Most people who have seen zucchinis in the grocery store have no idea where they began in the garden.

They start as large yellow/orange flowers coming from the center of the plant. As the vegetables grow, the flowers stay on the top of the growing cylinder until they eventually turn brown and wilt.

Zucchini plants growing in a planter in my front yard

The most important thing you need to know about growing zucchini plants is that they take up a HUGE amount of space. I like growing them in their own containers so that they don’t shadow and overtake other vegetables. Their beautiful leaves and flowers make them ideal vegetables to put in a front yard planter.
