Growing Radishes
Radishes are one of the most rewarding and easy crops to grow. I plant my radish seed tape, a biodegradable material that holds the radish seeds in place, the second week in April. The plants thrive in cool morning weather and warm afternoon sun. The seed tape helps keep the plants evenly spaced apart so the radish bulbs have room to grow beneath the surface. They may still require thinning for each plant to be at least 2 inches apart.

The radish seedlings emerge in just 7 days after planting (don’t forget to lightly water them daily). The tape helps keep them in fairly straight rows so there is less waste from having to thin clumps of growing plants.

After only a month in the ground, the radishes will be ready to harvest! You can tell when they are ready to harvest when the beautiful red bulbs start showing above the ground like in the photo above. Newly ripe radishes are less bitter than older radishes, so don’t leave them too long in the ground once you see them. I sprinkle them with salt and eat them plucked straight out of the ground!
