Let’s Get Ready to Plant!
By now you should have ordered your seeds, tested your soil (if using in ground beds or garden soil), and purchased your pots or raised beds. Above is a 2 foot by 8 foot raised bed that I just assembled for the deck. Now its time to prepare for the vegetable planting season! You don’t need to have a big yard or a dedicated plot for a garden out back or front. All you need are some pots, raised beds and a good 6-8 hours of sun!
First you should drill drainage holes in the bottom of any planters that do not have them. This is very important to keep the soil from getting too wet in the rain and rotting them roots of your plants. After that you need to create some sort of barrier between the soil and the surface you are resting the pots on. You can use black gardening fabric, old sheets like I do or any other material that will block the soil from leaving the pot as long as the barrier is permeable for water. On top of that you should add some small gravel or rocks for more drainage protection.
Lastly, add a good raised bed or potting soil to the pots. MiracleGro and other brands include slow release fertilizers in them that should last for several months of the growing season. Now, all we need to do is wait for the weather to warm up and we can plant!!!!!
